The idea of improvisation, broadly defined, has been integral to our imagination of the medieval musical past. It can be related to many elements of production: to the act of un-notated creation; to the manipulation and amplification of notated materials; to our observance of rigid rules and formulae; or to spontaneous freedom. Likely a product of the Carolingian Renaissance, this is the first medieval music treatise to address an aspect of chant performance that does not only relate to a memorized repertoire, but includes an unwritten practice of extemporizing an accompanying voice to a pre-given melody. The art of “coloration” or the ornamentation of a line, whether polyphonic or monophonic, had been an integral part of extemporization since at least the time of the Ad organum faciendum treatises. When planning author's ontological inquiries, the author's would do well to remember the possible existence of creativity that is not inspired, or ephemerality that is not performer- or expression-centered

Von der Fuge in Rot bis zur Zwitschermaschine

Paul Klee gehört nicht nur zu den prägendsten Malerpersönlichkeiten des 20. Jahrhunderts, sondern hatte auch eine starke Affinität zur Musik. So schrieb er unter anderem Musikkritiken, spielte als Amateur hervorragend Geige und verkehrte mit vielen Komponisten. Dieser Band präsentiert Texte über musikalisch beeinflusste und die Musik beeinflussende Werke Klees, insbesondere seine Beschäftigung mit Johann Sebastian Bach sowie die Rezeption seines gestalterischen Denkens im aktuellen Musikschaffen von Pierre Boulez bis Harrison Birtwistle. Bisher unbekannte Quellen, zahlreiche Abbildungen und Neuinterpretationen verhelfen dabei zu neuen Sichtweisen

Freie Improvisation zwischen romantischer Poetik und Avantgarde: 10 Paradoxien

Ein Musikimprovisator steht vor dem gleichen Dilemma wie der Jüngling in Heinrich Kleists romantischer Novelle Das Marionettentheater: Dieser zieht mit Eleganz einen Dorn aus seinem Fuss; sobald ihm aber die Bewegung im Spiegel so anmutig erscheint, dass er sie wiederholen möchte, verliert er Spontaneität und damit Unschuld und Natürlichkeit. Was Kleist vom Marionettenspieler verlangt, gilt auch für den Improvisator: Wille und Bewusstsein müssen ausgeschaltet werden, weil sie als Zensurinstanz wirken. In gelingenden Momenten, bedingt durch 10 Paradoxien, kann dann ein Glücksgefühl entstehen – für die Musiker*innen wie für ihr Publikum
